The National Yo-Yo Contest premiered in 1993.

It is held annually in Chico, California on the first Saturday of October.

----------------------------------

Recent yo-yo design innovation has turned the "Number One Toy of the 20th Century" into a sophisticated piece of sports equipment. The current ball-bearing performance quality yo-yos have increased the caliber of tricks performed by all players. The ease of using a ball-bearing yo-yo encourages new players to learn advanced skills faster than before. There are more players competing in contests and enjoying the sport than in any time in history. Yo-yoing has become a fresh entertaining activity for a whole new generation.

Today's contests have developed new formats. At the National Yo-Yo Contest there are two competition levels.

The Championship level encompasses the 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A divisions where players perform a freestyle routine made up of tricks of the players choice.

1A division players use one long-spin yo-yo to perform intricate string trick manipulations of both string and yo-yo.

2A division players use two looping yo-yos simultaneously in looping tricks that require quickness and timing.

3A division players use two long-spin yo-yos to perform intricate string tricks simultaneously with both yo-yos.

4A or Offstring players use a yo-yo that is unattached to the string but is still required to come back to the hand.

5A or Freehand players use of a counterweight griped in the hand instead of tying the string to a finger.

Players can earn a seeded spot into the Championship 1A Finals by winning one of the nine regional yo-yo contests authorized by the National Yo-Yo League. Day of contest preliminaries qualify additional players to the 1A finals and all the other championship divisions.

The Sport Ladder level is comprised of compulsory list of string tricks (1A) and looping tricks (2A).

In this division a player works his or her way up two 25 trick ladders with only one miss allowed within each ladder. There are six age-levels awarded in this division. It is a fun way for players of all ages to participate in the competitive aspect of yo-yoing.

The National Spin-Top Contest is held in conjunction with the National Yo-Yo Contest each year. The complexity of tricks have increased dramatically as the design improvements that revolutionized the sport of yo-yoing have also made their way into the spin-top.

All attendees will find there is time to swap tricks, meet new friends, and learn from the best players. Manufacturers are always in attendance to highlight and debut new products. Collectors also display during the day at the contest site.

Industry Awards presented annually at the National Contest Dinner: - The Duncan Family Award for Industry Excellence is awarded to an individual for quality innovation, production, or promotion that advances the quality of the sport. - The National Achievement Award is bestowed on a person whose effort successfully improves the sport, and positively influences the industry - The Sitton Sportsmanship Award is bestowed upon a person who exemplifies the best in sportsmanship and serves as an example of fair play. - The National League Merit Award is given to an individual who best serves and supports the league as a contest promoter or facilitator. - The Holiday Inn Best Junior Player Award is presented to the highest placing player aged 12 or younger. - The Best Girl Player Award is given to the highest placing female player. - The Most Inspirational Player Award is conferred by the judges upon an individual who proves an inspiration to others. - The Trick Innovator of the Year Award is presented by past recipients to an important developer of creative and influential new yo-yo tricks. - The Extreme Spin National Cup is won by the individual who scores the highest in combined placements in the Open division at Regional Contests.

Please join us at the Big one: the 141st Caledonian Club of San Francisco Gathering and Games

The Games will be held Labor Day weekend, September 2nd and 3rd, 2006 from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. At the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California.

Big - yes, we are a big Games, the biggest in the West, perhaps in the world...but it depends on how you measure things, and we don't want to compete with any of the other larger events on statistics, we merely want our perspective customers to know how and why we are big.

Bigger - The Caledonian Club of San Francisco Games were pretty good sized to start with, with over 2,000 guests in the first year, 1866. Now we have a true multi-ring entertainment broadside that can keep crowds of over 25,000 busy all day long, for two days running. Part of the reason for our growth is that almost all of the events are championships:

Highland dancing - Western United States - Open Highland Championships
Heavy Events - Scottish Heavy Events Championships and The 35th World Highland Games Heavy Events Championship
Scottish Country Dancing - Annual Scottish Country Dancing Adjudication
Five-a-side Soccer - pits the best California teams against each other in a two-day tournament.
Sheepdogs - Scottish Games Obstacle & Time Sheep Dog Trials
So you see why, in the world of Scottish events, the Pleasanton Games are the place to prepare for, qualify for and - hopefully and with hard work - win at. Whatever the event you are watching, you are seeing the best there is, competing at a high level
